Lecce, Puglia, Italy.
Awarded the "Moving Landscape" grant and residency, I developed a body of work comprising two projects:
Mobile Library + Festa Del Ringraziamento.

Mobile Library is a collection of photography, video, and maps. It looks at the landscape of the South East; the "Crossing Keepers" of FSE and their houses; and the trains, cars, and movement in the region.

Festa Del Ringraziamento was a social space designed to host Crossing Keepers along with members of the community at large and to allow for a celebratory dinner honoring the Keepers for their service to the community. The event granted the groups the chance to socialize before and during a large a meal. I performed as the executive chef, cooking for forty Italians. The event also resulted in the construction of paper materials, such as hand-drafted invitations and decorative elements, video and audio.

Atlantic Yards, Brooklyn, NY.
Investigation of one's grieving process by shifting from the act of eating to the act of cooking. Created in dialog with the displaced community in Brooklyn and the Greek community in Queens.
Koliva is a traditional Greek funeral cake. Photographic documentation of (2) different Koliva cakes, above, prepared by me, with recipes from neighboring Greeks.
"AY BK" = Atlantic Yards Brooklyn (NY).
The photomontage, incorporating the cake images within a scalable grid, was printed as wallpaper for installation (in the rear of a U-haul truck) that responded to the eminent domain in the area.
Koliva was shared, from the back of the truck, with the community, as a matter of group grieving.

• Size: n/a • Medium: Graphic Score • Year: 2010
This graphic score is used to convey my performance composition to other artists as a set of directions if they wish to realize the work themselves in subsequent performance.
Inner Terp is a performance for an entire ensemble comprised of vocalists and instrumentalists, and it requires projection of live video. The narrator and his/her selected ringleader determine an inner ensemble who huddle and block the narrator from the remaining outer ensemble. The narrator interprets (ASL) any story to the inner ensemble by gesture, while a camera focuses entirely on facial expressions. The inner ensemble vocalizes the story, per the direction of the ringleader; the live video feed (transmitting only the face of the narrator with as little gesticulation as possible) is projected onto the scrim, and the outer ensemble musically scores the narration as they deem fit.
This work deals with communication and misinterpretation, while also noting the vivid expressions that grace the face of sign language interpreters and equally contribute to the communication of any story.

Having become enamored with the "Free Store", as installed by other artists in lower Manhattan in 2009, I wrote a book about gift economies in a journal that I procured from the store.
After completing the novel, I donated the book into the inventory of the store thereby putting it into circulation.

During normal review of a digital photograph, viz. an image file in image processing software, it is never visually apparent that the file itself had firstly been constructed to be understood by the machine. This assembly language code is the concealed, cryptic structure that holds the image together. By hacking into the file, beyond "the picture" that the image software presents to us, we can illuminate the essence of the image as the machine knows it.

This particular work is derived from an image file (JPG) and is technically a deconstructed photograph. By loading the image file into a text editor, I found myself inspired by my manual scrolling of the "text file" and the way that the data was "dancing" across my monitor. I recreated this manual animation of dragging the scroll-bar by reconstructing the file into a series of photographs of each "page" and executed as a GIF animation. Still, the viewer is looking at a "photograph" as the computer knows it.

This work reconsiders Ad Reinhardt's Black Paintings in light of the process undertaken by Vik Muniz in his making of "Ad Reinhardt" (2000). I first created an object comprising particulate matter that I sourced from the library at Brooklyn College where Reinhardt was professor. Using the classification of the Library of Congress to influence my sourcing, I assembled a collection of detritus that allowed for distinct shades of black per knowledge category. The dust is sandwiched in acetate as a sculpture and then photocopied, thereby creating a representation of a representation.
