T J Hospodar

My primary passions are photography and performance, although initial studies of mathematics routed me through employment centering on data analysis. Now, I shift my focus away from revenues and headcounts and instead towards visual compositions and finally to cultural behavior, particularly the norms found within gift economies. Hospitality and tourist-versus-neighbor relations are interests of mine that inform my research, while meal-sharing and theatricality pervade my artwork. I am compelled by modes of participation and invest in work that is activated by the viewer, whether it incorporates correspondence, audience contribution, and/or community-based collaboration. I enjoy collaborating with other artists and have developed a series of situations with the artist 0H10M1KE called "Dinner Theatre." Episodes, of such, have explored the presentation of work in settings as varied as private residences, automobiles, corporate boardrooms, art galleries and public space. Other recent collaborations include the founding of Boardroom Bed & Breakfast, with Chloë Bass, which offers a home away from office in tandem with the structure and rigor of the workplace. Born in Ohio, residing in New York, I can currently be found operating my car service, often free, here in the USA.

Ohio-born TJ Hospodar, currently living in New York, initially studied Mathematics and Philosophy and commenced a career in Computer Science before continuing his false-start study of Photography finally at SUNY Purchase.  Having shifted a focus from the pattern recognition of visual studies to psychological studies; his permanent infatuation with the distance between neighbors, both literal and figurative, is increasingly evident in his nationwide work.  With the intent of understanding the variation between neighbor and tourist, TJ can presently be found peering over fences, surveying individuals and executing unsolicited collaboration.
